THE THOMAS CROWN AFFAIR
"The original The Thomas Crown Affair
was primarily a caper film," says director John McTiernan,
who has helmed such successful films as Die Hard and
Die Hard: With A Vengeance and The Hunt For Red October.
"This is a romance. It's about two hard cases, two people
who are very good about being successful singles and very bad
at sustained relationships."
Coming off the record-breaking success of his second James Bond
film, Tomorrow Never Dies, Pierce Brosnan relished the
opportunity to portray a forceful financier whose primary weapon
is his intellect. "I had long thought that Thomas Crown was
one of the truly clever and complex characters in the literature
of cinema," says Brosnan. "He is a powerful man for
whom winning is not enough; he craves the stimulation of a good
gambit - the more dangerous, the better. Moreover, this is a man
with no apparent vulnerabilities, guarded even in the presumed
sanctuary of his psychiatrist's office. "
Rene Russo has successfully portrayed smart, tough women throughout
her remarkable career. The role of Catherine combines these character
elements in a unique way. "Catherine has the instincts of
a bounty hunter and the determination of a dedicated cop,"
says Russo. "She is accustomed to being able to outwit, outmaneuver
and outlast any white-collar criminal she encounters. But in Crown,
she makes the big mistake of thinking she can get close enough
for the capture without falling for him."
Police detective Michael McCann, played by Denis Leary, warns
Catherine that she is getting too close to Crown for either comfort
or professionalism - but his concerns may be motivated as much
by his growing attraction to her as his worry about her effectiveness
on the job.
Ben Gazzara (Happiness, The Killing of a Chinese Bookie)
plays Andrew Wallace, Crown's attorney. Frankie Faison (The
Silence of the Lambs) plays Detective Paretti, McCann's police
partner. Internationally recognized for her appearances in DKNY
ads, supermodel Esther Cañadas makes her feature film debut
as Anna, the mysterious beauty with whom Crown has a secret relationship.
Faye Dunaway, who starred in the original The Thomas Crown
Affair and won an Oscar for her role in Network (1976),
appears as Crown's psychiatrist.
The filmmakers have assembled a skilled crew headed by executive
producer Michael Tadross (Die Hard: With a Vengeance),
co-producer Roger Paradiso (At First Sight), cinematographer
Tom Priestley (Blue Chips), production designer Bruno Rubeo
(The Devil's Advocate), editor John Wright, A.C.E. (Die
Hard: With a Vengeance) and first-time costume designer Kate
Harrington. Shooting took place around Manhattan and Westchester
County, New York, as well as on the Caribbean Island of Martinique.
