The first discussion about morals I ever had was in my teens. We discussed
SCARFACE. Realizing the true face of Tony Montana was an important moment when
growing up. Gangster films should always be moral stories.
I have always been fascinated by the idea of thief's honor. Of portraying people
who, from our perspective lack moral, but from their own point of view are
trying to do good through their own ethics, and to take these characters and
putting them against each other without pointing out any heroes. In all true
gangster films this is one of the key elements. Another is the idea of the
audience changing side and regretting their support for one of the characters.
The audience should be thrown back and forth with their loyalty to the
characters. I find that very interesting.
