| Alex Whitman
(Matthew Perry) is a straight-laced corporate
type from Manhattan. Isabel Fuentes (Salma Hayek)
is a fiery Mexican-American who believes in the
power of destiny. Neither gave a thought to where
a single night of passion would lead, but the
whims of chance had other ideas. When they meet
three months later, she's pregnant and they
decide to get married. It's a long way from
Manhattan to Las Vegas, but Alex is beginning to
think it was worth the trip. Fools Rush In tells
the funny, romantic story of fated lovers trying
their luck at the world's oldest game: love. |

 |
| ROMANTIC COMEDY - FOOLS RUSH IN is a
romantic comedy which, like SLEEPLESS IN SEATTLE
and FOUR WEDDINGS AND A FUNERAL, celebrates fate
as the key to bringing two lovers together. Fans
of those films will probably have no problem with
the film's fairy tale elements; others will
wonder why these two people have absolutely
nothing in common. Star Matthew Perry plays a
similar character to his "Friends"
role, so fans of that show should enjoy his
entertaining performance. Light, often funny, but
almost strictly for hopeless romantics. |

| FOOLS RUSH IN is
the next logical step in the development of the
romantic comedy as a celebration of Fate; where
SLEEPLESS IN SEATTLE asked you to root for two
people who don't meet until the final scene,
FOOLS RUSH IN asks you to root for two people
after you have spent 100 minutes observing that
they have absolutely nothing in common. The
script is a collection of disagreements on every
possible subject -- religion, child-rearing,
career, culture -- which goes on for so long and
from so many different directions that you might
think you've forgotten how perfect the main
characters are supposed to be for each other. The
fact is that the only thing they seem to have
going for them is really great sex...very nice,
but not nearly enough. It's a shame too, because
FOOLS RUSH IN is often very funny and
entertaining, thanks largely to the appeal of
"Friends" star Perry. He can do a
reaction take with the best of them, but his
"conversion" to born-again New Age
fatalist is a distressing conclusion. In a film
where very little ends up holding together, it is
ironic that the one thing which does hold
together -- our protagonists -- probably
shouldn't |
