Movie Type Title Bar
COMEDY - THE 6TH MAN is a comedy with a lot of physical humor from ghostly influence, but it also has a surprisingly emotional relationship between two brothers at its core. The comic effects of the ghost on a basketball team will be appealing to youngsters, as will the basketball action; college basketball fans might enjoy some amusing cameo appearances. However, viewers who appreciate strong stories and characters may be pleasantly surprised by this tale of a younger brother trying to emerge from the shadow of his more talented older brother. Sometimes clumsy in its execution, but appealing on a variety of levels.

Critic's Review Title Bar
ABOVE AVERAGE
Followers of college basketball will know THE 6TH MAN is a fantasy not just because a ghost is involved, but because the University of Washington and Stanford are in the Final Four. That's surprising enough, but it may be more surprising that THE 6TH MAN is not simply a typically dopey live-action Disney comedy. There are plenty of supernatural hijinks, to be sure, and Damon Wayans gives an energetic physical performance as a college basketball player dealing with a mischievous dead brother no one else can see. However, the real anchor of the story is the relationship between the two brothers, and the way the less talented, surviving brother (Wayans) deals with the loss of his superstar sibling (Kadeem Hardison). The execution is sometimes clumsy, and the basketball action isn't filmed particularly well, but the warm human element of THE 6TH MAN proves more satisfying than the slapstick comedy.

DETAILED STORYLINE
Just as college basketball star Antoine Tyler (KADEEM HARDISON) is about to realize his dream of making it to the NCAA Championships, he dies, leaving his younger brother Kenny (MARION WAYANS) to lead the perennially last placed Washington Huskies to victory. Heartbroken, Kenny loses his drive to win until Antoine's ghost appears, determined to take his team from worst to first.

Although nobody except Kenny can see or hear Antoine's wise-cracking, prankster ghost, sports reporter R.C. St. John (MICHAEL MICHELE) is determined to discover the reason behind the miraculous comeback the Huskies make following the slump that was triggered by Antoine's death.

As the team dribbles and slam dunks its way to the championship, the outcome is both comedic and heartfelt as Kenny comes to realize he must ask "The Sixth Man" to leave the team so he and his teammates can play fair and square, in Touchstone Pictures' comedy"The Sixth Man."
