| Andy Garcia stars
as Sean Casey, an idealistic street cop turned
Manhattan District Attorney who is thrust into
the limelight after prosecuting a high profile,
headline making case. As he moves deeper into the
criminal justice system Casey's world is torn
apart, as he experiences personal and
professional betrayal after discovering a crime
and cover-up among those closest to him. Through
the political deals and compromises that come
with his new job, Casey learns that his ideals
are unrealistic in a political system that forces
him to decide between loyalty and morality. |

| DRAMA - NIGHT FALLS ON
MANHATTAN is a drama about police corruption
which may appeal to fans of previous Sidney Lumet
dramas like PRINCE OF THE CITY and SERPICO. The
film is oddly paced, with indivdual scenes
structured quite slowly while the events of the
film jump forward at a pace that's sometimes
difficult to follow. There's not much action to
the film; it consists mostly of a dense plot and
characters reacting to moral grey areas. Some
good writing and acting, but not one of the
better films of this type. |

| If
NIGHT FALLS ON MANHATTAN is the first Sidney
Lumet film you've ever seen, you might be pretty
impressed. This story of police corruption in a
New York precinct includes some fine attention to
detail which creates one of film's more mundane
and depressing portraits of day-to-day criminal
justice. Unfortunately, Lumet has covered this
same ground many times before -- and better -- in
crime dramas like SERPICO, PRINCE OF THE CITY and
Q&A. Lumet is still eager to tell the same
story, so eager in this case that the narrative
races along like a drill from a speed-reading
course. If you manage to keep up with the
rampaging plot, you might notice that the
idealism of Andy Garcia's protagonist is a bit
much to take. NIGHT FALLS ON MANHATTAN is a
solid, well-acted drama, but one you've probably
seen before. |
